Bangkok Taxi Fares: The Basics
Bangkok meter taxis start at 35 baht for the first 1km. After that, it's roughly 7 baht per kilometer. Simple enough — but the actual fare depends on traffic, route, time of day, and whether the driver actually uses the meter.
Standard Meter Rates (2026)
1-10 km: 35-85 baht
10-20 km: 85-155 baht
20-40 km: 155-315 baht
40+ km: 315+ baht
Additional costs: expressway tolls (40-70 baht per gate), airport surcharge (50 baht from BKK/DMK), late night surcharge if negotiated flat rate (not required by law, but some drivers ask).

- BKK Airport to Silom: 350-500 baht (30-60 min)
- DMK Airport to Sukhumvit: 250-350 baht (25-45 min)
- Sukhumvit to Grand Palace: 100-150 baht (15-25 min)

Why Meter Fares Vary So Much
Two identical routes can have different fares depending on time of day. Bangkok traffic is the main variable. A 15km ride at 2pm takes 20 minutes on the expressway. The same ride at 6pm takes 50 minutes — and the meter keeps running the whole time. Traffic = higher fare.
This is why fixed-price rides make sense for longer routes. You know the cost before you sit down.
Grab vs Meter: When to Use Each
For short hops (under 5km), Grab and meter taxis cost about the same. For longer rides (10km+), meter taxis are usually cheaper — Grab's commission adds 20-30%.
Grab's advantage: upfront pricing, no haggling, driver tracking. Meter taxi advantage: lower cost for longer rides.
Taxi Scams to Watch For
"Meter broken": The meter is never broken. Get out and find another taxi.
"500 baht flat rate": A ride that should cost 150 on the meter. Refuse and insist on the meter.
Long route: If the driver doesn't know where your hotel is and seems lost, show Google Maps. Most Bangkok taxi drivers rely on GPS now anyway.
Extra charges: The only legitimate extras are the 50 baht airport surcharge and expressway tolls. Everything else is a scam.
Our Take
Meter taxis are the backbone of Bangkok transport. They're cheap, plentiful, and usually honest. But for airport transfers, cross-city rides, or if you don't speak Thai, a private fixed-price service eliminates every potential point of friction.
