Thailand's Monkey City, Two Hours Out
Lopburi is the day trip people mean to take and never do. Two hours north of Bangkok, the old town is a walkable cluster of Khmer and Ayutthaya-era ruins where long-tailed macaques own the streets around Phra Prang Sam Yot, the three laterite towers that are the town's postcard. Add King Narai's Palace, a national museum inside it, and a food scene built around the old station quarter, and you have one of the densest easy day trips from Bangkok.
And from mid-November through January, there is a second reason: the sunflower fields around Khao Chin Lae, south of town, bloom in blocks of yellow that draw photographers every morning.
The Route North
The mapped route runs Route 1 north through Saraburi, about 155 km from central Bangkok, typically 2 to 2.5 hours. One stop makes the drive better: Wat Phra Phutthabat in Saraburi, the footprint temple right off the highway, worth 30 minutes and a wai.
Your Options, With Real Numbers
Train. From Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, third class from about ฿50, around 2.5 to 3 hours. This is one of Thailand's classic budget rail runs, and the station in Lopburi is inside the old town, so it genuinely works. Downside: fixed timetables and a hot afternoon return if you misjudge the last comfortable train.
Minivan. From Mo Chit, roughly ฿120 to ฿150, about 2 hours. Drops at the Lopburi terminal, a short ride from the ruins.
Private car. Flat ฿20 per km, roughly 155 km mapped, so about ฿3,100 each way. For a full day with waiting at each stop, we quote a day rate before you book: one number, driver waits, and the sunflower detour south of town fits the itinerary without renegotiating anything.
A Day Trip Itinerary That Works
- 6:45am: leave Bangkok before the Rte 1 traffic builds.
- 8:15am: Wat Phra Phutthabat stop in Saraburi, stretch your legs.
- 9:45am: King Narai's Palace and the museum while the light is still kind.
- 11:15am: Phra Prang Sam Yot and San Phra Kan, the monkey heart of town.
- 12:30pm: lunch in the station quarter.
- 2:00pm: in season, the sunflower blocks at Khao Chin Lae, best light mid-afternoon.
- 6:00pm: back in Bangkok ahead of the worst of the evening rush.
That schedule is exactly the kind public transport fights you on: the sunflower fields and the Saraburi stop are not on the minivan's agenda.
Monkey Etiquette, Briefly
The macaques around the central shrines are bold, not aggressive. Do not carry plastic bags or visible food, take sunglasses and dangling things off, and do not feed them, however politely they ask. Keep snacks sealed in the car. A driver who has been there before helps; ours have.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do the sunflowers actually bloom?
Typically mid-November through early January, with the strongest displays around mid-December. Bloom timing shifts with the rains each year, so if flowers are the point of your trip, ask us to check current field conditions when you book.
Can we pair Lopburi with Ayutthaya?
Yes, they sit on the same northern corridor. Doing both properly adds roughly 80 km and turns the day into a two-stop loop; we quote it as a day rate with waiting at both. For a calmer day, pick one.
Is it kid friendly?
Very. Ruins to climb around, monkeys to watch from a safe distance, and a short drive home. Tell us your children's ages and we fit car seats. Our family transport guide covers the details.
