Moving a dog to the islands is a logistics problem, not a courage problem. Done right, it's one calm overnight drive, two short ferry legs, breakfast on the beach. Done wrong, it's a missed 10 AM ferry at Donsak with two bored dogs and a driver who's been awake 20 hours. Here is the plan we run.
The route
Bangkok → Donsak pier (Surat Thani) is 6–7 hours via Highway 4/401. The overnight pattern beats the same-day pattern every time for animals: leave Bangkok early evening, drive at the cool hours, sleep 4–5 hours near the pier (pet-friendly guesthouses exist in Don Sak town), then take the first Raja Ferry around 05:00–07:00 to Koh Samui. For Koh Phangan, change at Samui (Lipa Noi → Thong Sala, the Seatran/Raja interchange) — that's the second leg, about 30–45 minutes.
Ferry rules for pets
Raja Ferry and Seatran both accept pets, but conditions differ: Raja is generally relaxed about crated dogs on the car deck if you stay with the vehicle; on passenger-only catamarans (Lomprayah) rules are stricter and small carriers only. Expect a small pet fee or none if the dog stays with the vehicle — confirm when booking the car ticket. Foreigner tourist tickets are priced slightly higher than Thai tickets on some routes; a good operator quotes you one all-in price and eats the difference.

Quotes far below that usually mean 'van only, you sort the ferries' — fine for a driver's own holiday, bad when the 05:00 ferry has a queue. Quotes far above it are buying a brand name.
What actually goes wrong (our checklist)
Ferry timetable misread (the 'morning ferry' is 05:00, not 09:00) · crate too big for the van door · no water stop plan, dogs arrive dehydrated · driver wants cash before the last ferry is confirmed. A booked service should give you: driver name and phone in advance, the ferry timetable in writing, walk stops every 2–3 hours, and door delivery on the island. That's the standard for our intercity and island pet transport — fixed all-in quote before you confirm.
