Bangkok to Chiang Mai by Car: Worth the Drive?
Every few weeks, someone asks me if I can drive them from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. The answer is yes — but it's a 700 km journey that takes 10-12 hours of driving. For most tourists, flying makes more sense (1.5 hours, ฿1,500-3,000). But there are good reasons to drive, and if you have the time, it's one of the most scenic road trips in Thailand. Here's the full guide.
The Route: Bangkok to Chiang Mai
The main route follows Highway 1 (Phahonyothin Road) north through the central plains, then transitions to Highway 11 through Phitsanulok and Lampang before reaching Chiang Mai.
- Distance: ~700 km
- Driving time: 10-12 hours (without stops)
- With stops: 12-16 hours (recommended overnight stop)
- Highway tolls: ~฿300 total (Bangkok expressways + Highway 32 toll)
- Fuel cost (gasoline): ~฿2,000-2,500
- Fuel cost (my EV): ~฿600-800 in electricity (much cheaper!)
Note: My Jaecoo J5 EV has a 461 km range. For a 700 km trip, we'd need 1-2 charging stops (~30 min each). This is actually a nice excuse to stretch legs and grab food.
Why Drive Instead of Fly?
Let's be honest — for most travelers, flying is better. But driving makes sense if:
- You want to stop at Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, or Lampang along the way
- You have a lot of luggage or sports equipment (golf clubs, diving gear)
- You're traveling with a family and want to control the schedule
- You have 2-3 days and want a road trip experience
- You're moving or relocating with lots of stuff
- You want to see the Thai countryside — rice paddies, mountains, small towns
The Best Stops Along the Way
If you're going to drive 700 km, you might as well make it interesting. Here are the best stops, in order from south to north:
- Ayutthaya (80 km from Bangkok): Ancient capital, UNESCO World Heritage Site. Temples, ruins, Buddha statues. 2-3 hours minimum. See our Ayutthaya tour.
- Lopburi (150 km from Bangkok): Monkey city. Hundreds of macaques roam the streets and ancient Khmer ruins. Unique photo opportunity.
- Phitsanulok (380 km from Bangkok): Halfway point. Good overnight stop. Visit Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat (home to one of Thailand's most revered Buddha images).
- Sukhothai (450 km from Bangkok): UNESCO World Heritage. The first capital of Siam. Ancient ruins in a beautiful park setting. Rent a bicycle to explore. Worth a full day.
- Lampang (600 km from Bangkok): Famous for horse-drawn carriages and the beautiful Wat Phra That Lampang Luang. Less touristy than Chiang Mai.
- Doi Khun Tan National Park (650 km): Mountain pass. Great views, hiking trails, waterfall.
Suggested 2-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Bangkok → Sukhothai (450 km, ~6 hours driving)
- 7:00 AM — Depart Bangkok
- 9:00 AM — Ayutthaya (stop 2 hours for temples)
- 12:00 PM — Lunch in Lopburi
- 3:00 PM — Arrive Sukhothai Historical Park, explore until sunset
- Overnight in Sukhothai (hotels from ฿600-2,000)
Day 2: Sukhothai → Chiang Mai (300 km, ~5 hours driving)
- 8:00 AM — Depart Sukhothai
- 10:00 AM — Lampang (Wat Phra That Lampang Luang)
- 1:00 PM — Lunch in Lampang
- 3:00 PM — Arrive Chiang Mai
What Does It Cost to Drive to Chiang Mai?
Here's the full cost breakdown for a 2-day road trip (one-way):

Compare to flying: ฿1,500-3,000 + ฿150 taxi to airport + ฿150 taxi from CNX airport = ~฿1,800-3,300. Flying is cheaper and 10x faster — but you miss everything in between.

Let me be straight with you. For 90% of tourists, flying Bangkok → Chiang Mai is the right choice:
- Flight time: 1.5 hours vs 10-12 hours driving
- Flight cost: ฿1,500-3,000 (AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion)
- Frequency: 20+ flights per day between BKK/DMK and CNX
- You save 1-2 full days of your trip
Fly to Chiang Mai, then hire a car/driver locally for day trips. That's the smart play for most travelers. But if you have the time and love road trips, the drive is genuinely beautiful — especially the section through Lampang and into the mountains.

Either way, once you're in Chiang Mai, you'll want a local driver or rental car for day trips to Doi Suthep, the Elephant Nature Park, and the Handicraft Villages. Enjoy northern Thailand — it's a completely different vibe from Bangkok.
