What just happened
The Thai government declared Friday 16 October 2026 a special holiday in Bangkok, with work-from-home days for government offices on 12, 14 and 15 October — all to keep the city moving around the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings (12-18 October, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center). Around 15,000 delegates from 190 countries are in town, alongside about 1,000 related meetings across the city.
For everyone outside the government buildings, that means one thing: an unexpected 4-day weekend, Friday to Sunday (for many private companies, plus Monday for some). Hotels in Hua Hin and Pattaya will fill first, then the roads will fill. The winning move is booking your car before Wednesday.
The three trips worth taking
1. Ayutthaya — the classic day trip, and our most-booked. Temples, river views, and you're back in Bangkok by dinner. Full-day private SUV, door to door, 10 hours: ฿4,000 all-in (fuel, tolls, parking, driver — no extras added later). Early start beats the crowds at Wat Mahathat and the giant reclining Buddha at Wat Lokayasutharam.
2. Hua Hin — the seaside escape. Around 2.5 hours each way. Round trip in a private SUV: ฿4,000. Leave after breakfast, swim, seafood lunch on the pier, night market if you stay into the evening, home whenever you like. That's the point of a private car — no timetable but yours.

Why book a car at all that weekend
- Everyone leaves at once. Friday 16 October morning, the Motorway and Vibhavadi will look like Songkran exodus. Buses and vans sell out; app cars surge. A pre-booked private car locks the price before the surge exists.
- Security cordons around QSNCC and government buildings will re-route traffic all week (12-16 Oct). Local knowledge of which ramp is closed matters that week more than usual.
