7 Bangkok Day Trips That Are Actually Worth It (With Real Prices)

There are a million "best day trips from Bangkok" lists online. Most of them are written by people who visited once and listed everything within 200km. I've actually done all of these. Multiple times. Here are the ones worth your time and money.

1. Ayutthaya — The One You Shouldn't Skip

Ayutthaya was the capital of Thailand before Bangkok. The ruins are UNESCO World Heritage, spread across a park you can explore by bicycle. It's 80km from Bangkok, takes about 1.5 hours by car. The temples are stunning — especially Wat Chaiwatthanaram at sunset.

Cost: 1,600 baht for private car round trip. Add 50 baht park entry and 50 baht bike rental.
Time needed: Full day (8am-5pm)
Best time: November-February (cooler weather)
Pro tip: Hire a local guide at the park entrance for 300 baht. Worth every satang.

2. Pattaya — More Than What You've Heard

Yes, Pattaya has a reputation. But 2 hours south of Bangkok, there's a legit beach town with good food, water sports, and the Sanctuary of Truth (an incredible all-wood temple). The drive down is smooth — highway all the way.

Cost: 1,500 baht one way. 3,000 baht round trip if you want the driver to wait.
Time needed: Full day or overnight
Best for: Beach lovers, families with kids

3. Kanchanaburi — The Bridge and Beyond

The Bridge over the River Kwai, the Death Railway, Erawan Falls (7 tiers of turquoise pools you can swim in). Kanchanaburi is 130km west and absolutely worth the drive. The Erawan Falls alone justify the trip.

Time needed: Full day (leave by 7am to see everything)
Pro tip: Visit the Erawan Falls first (arrive by 9am before the tour buses). Do the Death Railway bridge in the afternoon.

4. Hua Hin — The Royal Beach Town

Hua Hin is where Bangkok's elite have beach houses. It's 200km south — about 2.5 hours. Clean beaches, great seafood, a beautiful royal palace, and a night market that's actually good. Less chaotic than Pattaya, more refined.

Pro tip: Have dinner at the night market, walk on the beach at sunset, then drive back. You'll be home by midnight.

5. Amphawa Floating Market — The Real One

Forget Damnoen Saduak (the tourist trap floating market everyone goes to). Amphawa is where Bangkok locals actually go. Firefly boat tours at dusk are magical — hundreds of fireflies lighting up the riverside trees. It's 80km from Bangkok, about 1.5 hours.

6. Koh Samet — The Quick Island Getaway

Koh Samet isn't technically a day trip — it's an island that requires a 30-minute ferry. But from Bangkok, you can be on a white sand beach by 10am. The water is clearer than Pattaya, the beaches are smaller and more intimate, and there's a national park entrance fee (200 baht) that keeps development restrained.
