This Is What a Bangkok Ride Day Trip Looks Like
Every so often we get to take a trip that reminds us why we love this job. Last weekend, a wonderful family of three trusted us with their Saturday — and we packed it with the best of Thailand's countryside: a railway market, a floating market, fireflies on the river, and dinner at a local favourite. Here's how the day went, in our own words.
Maeklong Railway Market: Trains Through the Stalls
We picked our guests up at their Bangkok hotel at noon and rolled into Maeklong about an hour later — just in time for the famous train. If you haven't seen it: the market stalls sit right on the tracks, and when the train comes through, the awnings fold back in seconds, the train inches past the produce, and everything snaps back like nothing happened. Watching our guests' faces during those thirty seconds? Priceless. That's why we time this market around the train schedule, every trip.
Amphawa Floating Market: Snacks, River, Repeat
Afternoon brought us to Amphawa — the weekend-evening floating market where Bangkok locals actually go. Boat after boat of grilled river prawns, boat noodles, coconut ice cream, mango sticky rice. Our guests grazed their way along the canals while we strolled with them, and the rain that had been threatening all week politely held off.
Dinner First, Fireflies Second (A Pro Tip)
Here's a trick we've learned from many evenings in Amphawa: eat dinner before the boat, not after. The firefly boats run on a fixed slot, and hungry passengers make for distracted firefly-watchers. So we settled everyone into a riverside restaurant we love — order in, eat well, finish by 5:50 — and walked the two minutes to the pier with everyone comfortable and ready for the main event.
The Firefly Boat: The Reason You Come
At 6:00 PM sharp we pushed off from the pier — just our guests, one boat, one boatman, life jackets on. For a full hour we drifted along the Maeklong canal as the sky went dark and the lamphu trees lit up with hundreds of tiny lights. Real fireflies, wild and silent, blinking together in the mangroves. There's no photo that captures it properly (we tried — see the picture above for the smiling part instead). Rainy season, by the way, is when the fireflies are at their brightest. Some things are worth getting a little wet for.
Home by Nine
Boat back at 7:30, car at the pier, and we had our guests back at their Bangkok hotel by around 9 PM — tired legs, full stomachs, camera rolls full.

The whole evening — private car, English-speaking driver, fuel, tolls, parking, and the day shaped entirely around your pace — was ฿4,500 all-inclusive for the group (the private firefly boat is arranged on the day; the boatman is paid directly, typically ฿500–600 per boat).
